A modern parish church in Singapore features two tables facing the congregation: the table of the word, where the presiding priest reads the Gospel and in his homily breaks the bread of the Scriptures, and the table where the Eucharist is celebrated. Placed at the center of the sanctuary in that Singapore church, these two tables indicate two key functions of priests as preachers and teachers and as leaders in worship.
Priests mediate teaching from God and lead the assembly in worship.
When someone asks what I do for a living, I mention that I am a La Salette Missionary. Their next question often is “What is a La Salette?” For all those who have similar questions, I want to share with you the “who, what, where, when and how” of my own religious community.
Who are the La Salette Missionaries?
We are a Catholic Religious Community of men and women, founded on the apparition of Our Blessed Lady to two teenagers in the small village of La Salette in the French Alps on Sept. 19, 1846. Her message imbues and inspires our life and mission. We devote ourselves to the charism (or special mission) of reconciliation.
At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’
"When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
Even small donations help us to continue to Make Mary's message known.
We update our site every 3 weeks (or so) and would love to let you know when we do. Please sign up for our newsletter.
Our Community: The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette are deeply rooted in the Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette which occurred near the hamlet of La Salette in southeastern France on Sept. 19, 1846. The Missionaries were founded in 1852 by Bp. Philbert de Bruillard, Bishop of Grenoble, France, and presently serve in some 25 countries.
Our Province: The Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas, was founded in 2000AD and is one of several provinces in the congregation. The members of this Province serve mainly in the countries of Canada, the United States and the Region of Argentina/Bolivia.
Our Mission: Our La Salette ministry of reconciliation responds to the broad vision given by Mary at La Salette as well as in response to the needs of the Church. As reconcilers, we together with the laity take seriously Mary’s mandate: “You will make (Mary’s) message known to all (her) people.”
